UX and visual design
Designing the layout, navigation and product presentation around how customers buy comics.
Publishing · Comics · Pre-orders
New UX, visual design and implementation of a publisher’s store - with navigation by series, characters and creators, plus upcoming releases and pre-orders.
About the project
Egmont’s store serves comic readers and collectors. For this audience, specific series, creators and characters matter. An important part of the project was designing an interface that met their expectations. We were responsible for UX, visual design, Hyvä frontend implementation and adapting the store to a publishing catalogue. Egmont retains its own presentation of the brand and offering.
Scope of work
Designing the layout, navigation and product presentation around how customers buy comics.
Implementing the Magento 2 store interface within the PWN group’s platform.
Connecting products to series, characters and creators and adapting filters to publishing data.
Presenting edition, format, author, availability and related-title information.
Supporting pre-orders and supplying the catalogue with ERP data.
Developing the customer account and features supporting store use and order fulfilment.
Several parallel ways to browse the offering, linked to product pages.
Information including publication date, binding, page count, language, series and contributors.
Presenting titles before release and allowing customers to order them in advance.
Separately communicating titles returning to the offering and order-fulfilment information.
Reader ratings and the ability to save products of interest.
Displaying cover and selling prices, alongside promotions for selected titles.
Selected solutions
A comic reader may look for the next volume in a particular series, work by a favourite artist or a story featuring a favourite character. We incorporated these needs into navigation and product-page design. Publishing information has two roles in the store: describing a publication and leading readers to related titles.
A publisher’s offering changes with new releases, editions selling out and reprints. The store distinguishes upcoming releases, pre-orders and current title availability. This data needs to remain consistent with product pages and the information used to fulfil orders.
Results
Egmont received its own store design and a Hyvä frontend on Magento 2. Navigation by series, characters and creators reflects how readers find comics, while the catalogue supports upcoming releases, pre-orders and reprints. The project combined visual design with features needed for everyday publishing sales.
