Why Do Customers Abandon Their Carts?
The phenomenon of abandoned carts.
In the online store environment, "abandoned carts" are nothing more than unfinished transactions. The whole process, or rather the phenomenon, begins when a client adds products to the cart that they would like to purchase, but does not finalize the purchase. This unwanted mechanism occurs in all online stores. According to research conducted by the Baymard Institute, nearly 70% of visits to online stores do not end with a purchase.
Key factors behind abandoned carts.
The discussed research identifies several reasons for online cart abandonment. One of them is surprise regarding shipping costs. Not all stores provide these costs clearly, especially when it concerns free shipping. Many customers only find out that free shipping is available beyond a certain order value during the purchase process.
Another reason is the requirement to create an account. Although most stores allow purchases as a guest, there are stores that do not clearly display this option or outright do not allow purchases without registration, which may result in cart abandonment.
Very often, a lengthy and complicated purchasing process is also a factor that encourages leaving the cart without completing the transaction. It is worth ensuring that this process does not cause confusion among buyers. It should be minimized to requiring only the essential information in the address form. Delivery methods, along with their costs and processing times, should also be presented in a clear and readable way.
Lack of sufficient payment methods can also lead to an unfinalized purchase. Some payment methods are better suited for mobile shopping while others are not, and clients often choose the methods they find more convenient or are familiar with. Limiting payment methods to only one or two can increase abandoned carts by up to 6%.
Continuous improvement of the store is the only key to sales success. Attention should be paid to emerging technologies and building a safe environment for users in the store. Another important aspect is simplifying and shortening processes on the site to the bare minimum.
